Ring
Cashing in Stage 3
Ring makes home security cheap and easy, but the hardware is a funnel into a subscription: without Ring Protect you can’t review recorded video, and the basic plan rose 25% in 2024. Amazon has also kept trying to turn customers’ cameras into a surveillance network, retreating after backlash. The cameras are the lock-in; the subscription is the toll. Stage 3.
